General Life Issues
You do not need to be experiencing mental illness to consult with a psychologist. Many clients seek
assistance for a range of personal reasons, and enjoy the benefit of engaging in a structured,
supportive and private therapeutic relationship.
Additionally, after completing treatment to address mental health symptoms, such counselling is important.
COMMON AREAS THAT MAY BENEFIT FROM GENERAL LIFE COUNSELLING MAY INCLUDE:
- Education and support to deal with life circumstances and challenges
- Education and support to deal with managing a family member with a mental illness
- Treatment of low-level mental health symptoms (eg low mood, problematic anxiety) in order to prevent escalation
- Relationship problems
- Mood regulation
- Adaptive coping
- Stress management
- Personal growth
- Breaking patterns of problematic behaviour
- Emotion regulation and management
- Education and support in times of grief and loss
- Adjusting to a new job, being newly married, having children or other milestones
- Other concerns specific to your situation
